Mucopolysaccharide histochemistry of gill epithelial secretions in brook trout exposed to acid pH. [Brook]

Journal Article · · Proc. Pa. Acad. Sci.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5293903

Histochemical analyses were made of gills from trout exposed to acid pH. An important aspect of this work was an examination of specific stains (e.g. colloidal iron, mucicarmine, and alcian blue) with respect to their utility in detecting changes in mucin content and distribution in acid-exposed fish. It was established that colloidal iron is superior to other stains in terms of contrast and discreteness of staining. Gills of trout exposed to acid water showed an increase in mucin content and a proliferation of cells between gill lamellae such that individual lamellae are indistinguishable.
