Mobile gas compressor cuts blowdown wastage for AGTL

For repair and maintenance of isolated sections of transmission pipeline, Canada's Alberta Gas Trunk Line Co., Ltd., has mounted a Norwalk Turbo centrifugal gas compressor powered by an Avco Lycoming turbine on a 48-ft-long Columbia trailer. The resulting ultracompact unit can save 75 to 80% of the gas now being vented in blowdown procedures. It requires only 10 h to reduce pressure from 800 down to 160 psi in a 20-mile section of a 30-in.-diameter pipe. A diesel-powered generator on the trailer's gooseneck provides electricity for the heaters, lights, control panel, and fan motors.
