Observation and study of the vector meson C(1480) which decays by the channel phi. pi. /sup 0/

Final data are presented on the charge-exchange reaction ..pi../sup -/p..-->..phi..pi../sup 0/n at 32.5 GeVc. The experiment was performed in the 70-GeV accelerator at the Institute of High Energy Physics in the combined spectrometer Lepton-F. The mass spectrum of the phi..pi../sup 0/ system shows a new resonance with mass M = 1480 +- 40 MeV, width GAMMA = 130 +- 60 MeV, and quantum numbers I = 1 and J/sup PC/ = 1/sup - -/, the C(1480) meson. The cross section is found to be ..sigma..(..pi../sup -/p..-->..Cn)BR(C..-->..phi..pi../sup 0/) = 40 +- 15 nb. The C meson is strongly coupled with the phi..pi../sup 0/ channel and is interpreted as a possible exotic state
