Observation of a structure in the mass spectrum of the phi. pi. /sup 0/ system

A structure designated C(1430) with mass M = 1430 +- 20 MeV/c/sup 2/ and width GAMMA = 100 +- 30 MeV/c/sup 2/ has been found in the mass spectrum of the phi..pi../sup 0/ system produced in the charge-exchange reaction ..pi../sup -/p..-->..(phi..pi../sup 0/)n at an incident-pion momentum of 32.5 GeV/c. The statistical reliability of the observed structure amounts to eight standard deviations or better. The C(1430) state has isospin I = 1, odd charge parity, spin J> or =1, and it may be exotic.
