New technology and cooling tower design practices

When a direct link to the water source, called once-through cooling, is ruled-out, the use of cooling towers to supply cool water to the condensers is a very common option. Cooling towers are an increasingly common choice simply because they are capable of meeting the needs best, in most cases. This, in turn, is a matter of flexibility and economy which brings us to consider the state-of-the-art in cooling towers; to look at the various types of towers in use now, and see how they respond to the present and the future needs of the industry. The topics discussed include: common cooling tower variations; trends in cooling tower design; declining use of wood; counterflow designs; mechanical draft and natural draft usage; price and cost; round crossflow towers; forced-draft round towers; and fan-assisted towers.
