Cooling tower practices
The United States accounts for 50% of the world cooling tower market and has been divided equally among the petrochemical industry, electric power generation, and comfort cooling. This is predicted to shbrtly become 25% petrochemical, 15% comfort cooling, and 60% electric power generation. In wet towers, water comes in intimate contact with the cooling air and transfers about 75% of the total heat by evaporation. Air--water contact occurs in the fill packing. Crossflow and counterflow describe wet towers with respect to the relative flow directions of the air and falling water in the fill. The dry type of cooling tower uses either aircooled condensers or air-cooled heat exchangers, and there is no contact between air and water. The wet-dry tower has both wet fill and dry heat exchange surface. Towers are further classified by the method of creating air movement through them by mechanical draft, natural draft, or a combination of mechanical and natural draft. (MCW)
