A method for the analysis of the main types of carbonyl groups in gums recovered from gasolines using IR spectroscopy and reactions of basic hydrolysis is described. The gummy products from naphthas obtained in secondary processes and in primary crude oil distillation were investigated. The gums were treated with a sodium bicarbonate solution to identify the carboxyl groups. It was possible to establish that the main types of carboxyl compounds in the gums were ketones and esthers.
