The process of treating naphtha for the production of gasoline of improved color and reduced sulfur content and gum-forming tendency comprises agitating the naphtha with a treating agent belonging to the class consisting of boron fluoride and boron fluoride dissolved in sulfuric acid in the absence of other treating agents of acid nature. The boron fluoride is added in an amount ranging from 0.06 to 0.15 lb/bbl of naphtha, and the sludge formed is separated from the naphtha.
