Cumulative processes and quark distributions in nuclei
The spectra of cumulative nucleons and mesons produced in the interaction of high energy particles with nuclei are studied on the basis of the hypothesized existence of multiquark (in particular, 12q) bags in nuclei. It is shown that the exponential momentum distribution of quarks in the 12q bag e/sup -k//k/sub 0/ for k>>k/sub 0/ (which corresponds to the data on lepton-nucleus interactions at large q/sup 2/) leads to an almost exponential distribution of the cumulative particles in the light cone variable ..cap alpha../sub B/ = (E/sub p/-p cos theta)/m/sub N/ for p/sub perpendicular/ = 0: f(..cap alpha../sub B/,p/sub perpendicular/ = 0) = E/sub p/d/sup 3/sigma/d/sup 3/papprox.e/sup -a/..cap alpha..B, where a = m/sub n//2k/sub 0/ = 7--8. We also study the p/sub perpendicular/ dependence of f(..cap alpha../sub B/,p/sub perpendicular/). The yields of cumulative resonances and also effects related to possible differences between the u- and d-quark distributions in nuclei with N>Z are also discussed.
