Hoping to protect its industrial customer base--as well as the environment--Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) has called for a mandatory environmental disclosure by all power providers that want to compete in New Jersey. In a formal filing in response to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) plan for deregulating electric power, PSE&G called for a state-imposed protection standard requiring all sellers to periodically disclose systemwide emissions of nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide particulates, as well as any other pollutants named by the state. PSE&G is recommending that those companies whose systemwide rates exceed the New Jersey standard be required to purchase a sufficient number of emission credits. The company also promised to {open_quotes}work vigorously{close_quotes} toward BPU`s goal of a 5%-10% rate reduction for all customers.
