Public Service Electric and Gas Co. of New Jersey (PSE&G) and AT&T have successfully completed a proof-of-concept demonstration of a new interactive, two-way customer communications system. The system is designed to help utility customers save money and energy and help utilities reduce costs, improve efficiency and offer new customer services. The system, called the AT&T Integrated Broadband Utility Solution, employs technology developed by AT&T`s Advanced Technology Systems in cooperation with PSE&G that links utilities and their customers along the information superhighway. The links enable such services as remote automatic meter-reading, monitoring of power used by individual appliances, remote automatic on-off control of appliances, automatic connection and disconnection of utility services, real-time pricing (changes in electricity prices based on demands on the overall system) and automatic control of appliances based on changes in energy pricing levels. The success of the demonstration project means they will proceed with a pilot project involving 1,000 PSE&G customers late this year.
