An expert system embodies in a computing system the knowledge-based components of an expert human skill. This is done in such a form that the system can offer intelligent advice on demand and justify its own line of reasoning. The design and construction of expert systems is now proceeding worldwide in the laboratories of both academic institutions and giant corporations. This activity is accompanied by the rise of a new kind of specialist, the knowledge engineer. Medicine, plant pathology, molecular genetics, structural analaysis, income tax advice and adaptive control are among the widely separated areas which can profit from the. Knowledge-engineering approach. This book includes a survey and critical review of expert systems, discusses the expanding front of application, and surveys the new waves of logic programming and its methodological foundations. It also tackles a theme which is moving to the center of expert systems work, namely the transfer of conceptualised knowledge both from machine to human user and in the reverse direction with computer as pupil. Systems which are able in some degree to find and assimilate new knowledge for themselves are also described.
