Although artificial intelligence is a diverse field, including natural-language processing and computer vision, most progress in AI has been achieved by using computers to simulate human experts in narrowly defined subjects. Using heuristic approaches and novel programming environments, these expert systems constitute an exciting and profitable new class of computer applications. Knowledge engineering address applications previously considered inappropriate for computerisation.
