Process for generation of carbon monoxide

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5256285
A process is described for the production of carbon monoxide from carbonaceous fuels wherein the fuel is reacted with oxygen to produce a product gas stream comprising carbon monoxide and containing entrained free carbon. The product gas stream is contacted with water thereby effecting the removal of carbon from the gas stream and producing a dispersion of carbon in water. The dispersion is withdrawn from the gas scrubbing zone, and water is separated from the dispersion to form an aqueous slurry. The aqueous slurry is contacted with a liquid hydrocarbon whereby carbon particles are transferred from the aqueous slurry to the liquid hydrocarbon to form a slurry of carbon particles in liquid hydrocarbon. The liquid hydrocarbon containing carbon so recovered from the gas stream is passed into a reaction zone for the conversion of the hydrocarbon and the recovered carbon to product gas.
