The stepwise ozonization of balkhashite in glacial acetic acid permits more than 75% of the carbon of the initial organic matter to be converted into a soluble form. The C/sub 7/-C/sub 25/ normal monocaboxylic acids, the C/sub 2/, and C/sub 4/-C/sub 21/ normal dicarboxylic acids, and ..gamma..-lactones of hydroxy dicarboxylic acids have been detected in the ozonization products by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) and chromato-mass spectrometry. The yields of ozonization products and the component composition of the substances identified indicate a saturated cyclic and nonaromatic nature of balkhashite and the participation of the acids of natural fats in its formation. The composition of the water-insoluble acids from the ozonization of balkhashite reveals a similarity with the composition of the corresponding acids of certain shales.
