Effect of thermocouple sheaths on the temperature response in thermal property measurement

Journal Article · · Int. Chem. Eng.; (United States)

The disturbance of the temperature field in a cylindrical specimen due to the position of a thermocouple probe and due to the thermal properties of its insulating sheath was calculated by the finite-element method. The errors of measurement were calculated for both continuous and periodic heating. When the thermal diffusivities of the thermocouple and the sheath are higher/lower than that of the specimen, the temperature of the specimen is higher/lower than when they are equal. The errors are smaller, the closer the thermal diffusivity of the sheath is to that of the specimen. The errors are reduced if a side-wall thermocouple is some distance from the surface of the specimen.
