How steam is selectively injected in open hole gravel packs. [Oil well]

Heavy oil often is found at shallow depths in thick, unconsolidated sands intercalated with shales. Under these conditions, an efficient completion method is to cement an oil string into the top of the sand. Then the productive interval is underreamed and a slotted liner is run and gravel packed. To increase economic recovery from such reservoirs, steam injection and, in particular, steam soak has proved to be successful. But under certain conditions, injection profiles may be poor and some method of selective steam injection is required to ensure the depletion of all principal sands. Simple and cost effective equipment has been developed and extensively field tested to permit the selective placement of steam into these type completions.
