Big-inch winter pipe line construction returned to northwestern Ontario in 1989 on the largest scale in recent years with the first stage of a major capacity expansion on the TransCanada Pipeline Ltd. (TCPL) gas transmission system. Substantially completed by spring breakup, the project consisted of 82.5 mi of 42-in. pipeline in three loops, each with a different contractor, with varying degrees of speed and conditions. The pipeline construction, and techniques developed therein, are described in this article.
