The looping job on the TransCanada PipeLines' main gas transmission line in eastern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario is described. Consisting of 129 miles of 42-in. pipe in sevenwidely-separated sections covering more than 500 miles, much of it was in wilderness country but with good access from hard surfaced roads. Designed to increase throughput capacity in anticipation of growing markets for the 1982-83 heating season, the looping was done in winter on frozen ground because of a large proportion of muskeg terrain along with Precambrian granite rock. Problems with big rock spreads, tie-ins and water crossings were examined.
