Use of dry gas seals and active magnetic bearings in booster compressors on a natural-gas pipeline system eliminates problems associated with oil entrainment in the gas stream and the inherent maintenance problems associated with oil systems in gas compression. TransCanada Pipelines Ltd. (TCPL) found advantages in a recent installation and operation of a set of dry gas seals and active magnetic bearings in a booster compressor unit on its system. This article details the design concepts and operating principles of the new system.
