The Consumer Products Energy Efficiency Amendments of 1985 encourages the dissemination of information about and the market for energy-efficient household appliances as a way to reduce energy demand and dependence on import energy sources and to reduce the environmental impacts of fossil fuel power plants. The bill requires the disclosure of energy efficiency both in advertising and at the point of sale. The information available to consumers should also include estimates of the annual operating cost of each product. Besides requesting a 20% improvement in energy efficiency and a standard efficiency rating system for major appliances, the bill promotes domestic production as a way to increase employment.
