Innovative projects pay off in new buildings: 2000 heat pumps perform all HVAC for skyscraper

Installation of a heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system employing nearly 2000 water source heat pumps cost 40% less than a comparable variable air volume (VAV) system with central boilers and chillers. Because the heat pump system is able to make widespread use of heat generated by lights, office equipment, and workers, annual electricity consumption estimates are 17 kWh per square foot. This compares favorably with the 22 kWh usage of the average all-electric building. The system allows flexibility to add capacity and to establish zones. An Ibex direct digital control energy management system controls the system through 10,000 points.
