Altering air handlers said to cut HVAC energy up to 20%

Journal Article · · Energy User News; (United States)

Operators of commercial buildings report a 10 to 20% drop in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) costs when they retrofit variable-air-volume (VAV) units to deliver only the volume of air that is required. VAV systems reduce the electricity required to operate cooling-and-heating as well as air-handling equipment. VAV users install mechanical equipment, such as discharge dampers, fan inlet vanes, variable-pitch vane-axial fans, bypass controls, or variable-width volume controls to deliver varying amounts of air at constant temperature. Sensors operating in conjunction with building thermostats regulate the equipment. (DCK)
