Facing the challenge of nuclear waste

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is going ahead with plans to safely store hazardous wastes from its nuclear power plants while national policies are developed for permanent storage. TVA had planned to use temporary open pool storage at the plant site and recycle uranium and plutonium until the reprocessing moratorium was imposed. The storage space has since been redesigned to handle larger volumes. TVA now intends to provide on-site storage for the 40-year life of each plant. Low-level wastes have been buried at Barnswell, SC. TVA director, S. David Freeman, sees the Three Mile Island accident as proof that nuclear plants must be treated differently, with safety given first consideration. TVA's new policy of on-site storage will eliminate the transportation hazards until mined geologic repositories are prepared. New technology will improve spent fuel rod storage, making it more compact. (DCK)
