Hadronic photoabsorption and coherent photoproduction of. pi. /sup 0/ mesons in Be and C nuclei in the resonance energy region

We report the results of new experiments carried out in a tagged photon beam with energy resolution of the tagging-system channels approx. <40 MeV (full width at half-height). The total cross section for photoproduction of hadrons has been measured in Be and C nuclei in the photon energy region E/sub ..gamma../ = 0.2--0.85 GeV. The results, normalized per nucleon, agree within experimental error for C and Be and in the energy region of the second resonance show the presence of a peak. We have also measured the total cross section for photoproduction of ..pi../sup 0/ mesons without charged particles in the final state and the total cross section for photoproduction of ..pi../sup 0/p for determination of the total cross section for coherent photoproduction of ..pi../sup 0/ mesons. It is found that the total cross section for coherent photoproduction of neutral pions decreases strongly for E/sub ..gamma../greater than or equal to400 MeV, approaching zero, which is in good agreement with the predictions of resonance models
