Minutes of a meeting in Leuna on April 27, 1942 concerning DHD and HF processes (in German)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5182139
This discussion centered on the most recent experiences with the two processes. In light of experiments and production experience, Ludwigshafen had decided on the following guidelines for operation o DHD: (1) sudden rises in temperature should be avoided, as should falls in temperature of more than 25/sup 0/C. (2) When possible, higher pressures, up to 50 atm total pressure, should be used. (3) Inputs of gas should be at least 1.0 cubic meter per kilogram of oil, but preferably 1.5 cbm/kg oil. (4) Throughputs of starting materials should be no more than 0.5 kg/liter/hr, and should be less if that would not decrease production. The report included tables giving data on which these recommendations were based, showing the principal advantages gained to be a lowering of coke buildup, an increase of yield of gasoline, or an increase of lower-boiling point components in the gasoline. The discussion of the HF process involved results of tests with two different types of oven systems (unheated kiln ovens versus heated tube ovens), three types of starting materials (naphthenic, paraffinic, mixed), various arrangements of patterns of temperature and catalyst activity through each oven and through the sequence of ovens, and various values of pressures and loading. There was discussion of points on which Ludwigshafen and Leuna still had differences of opinion and differing test results, such as optimum values for pressures, temperature distribution, and loadings, and optimum distribution of aromatics formation among the ovens. Finally there was discussion of Leuna's method of refining the HF gasoline using sulfuric acid and Ludwigshafen's method of fighting corrosion due to sulfur dioxide.
