Report on the discussion in Ludwigshafen on April 14, 1944, about the hydrogenation of DHD residue (in German)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6415218
In the DHD process, 4 to 6% of the liquid product remained as a residue after distillation; it consisted mainly of naphthalene. Up to the time of the report, this residue had been combined with middle oils from the liquid phase and treated with catalyst 5058 to give VT705 gasoline. However, Ludwigshafen was suggesting that the residue could be treated over a special catalyst (9049) of molybdenum on synthetic aluminum silicate to give an aromatic fuel. The reaction conditions were given as follows: temperature, about 21 millivolts with a maximum of 23 millivolts (probably as measured by iron-constantan thermocouples); hydrogen partial pressure, not less than 250 atm; amount of gas into the oven, 2.5 m/sup 3/ per kg of product into the oven, throughput, 0.4 kg per liter of catalyst (measured as gasoline yield) or 0.8 kg per liter of catalyst (measured as product into the oven); heat of reaction, 500 cal per kg of gasoline or 250 cal per kg of product into the oven; by-product gases, about 17%, with a range of 15% to 20%; and yield of liquid product, about 50% middle oil and 50% gasoline, which had about 60% aromatics if the distillation cutoff were 170/sup 0/C. The catalyst 9049 was as sensitive to nitrogen and phenols as was catalyst 6434. Because of the heat of reaction, it was necessary to inject cold gas into the ovens. The product did not need to have sulfur added before processing. It was suggested that the liquid product from this process could be combined with the liquid product from the DHD process for a common distillation, so that the middle oil from this process would help to dilute the DHD residue and prevent the naphthalene from crystallizing out and causing problems.
