This paper attempts to present an understanding of the probable role of computers in production-scale fermentation process. It presents the computer as a tool which should, ideally, act as a transparent link between the process and the user. The first section deals with the special advantages of computer control over other forms of control, the second section with some of the functions and techniques of computer control, and the final section with what I would consider to be desirable characteristics of a computer control system.
