The Natural Gas Pipeline Safety Act of 1968 and the Hazardous Liquid Pipeline Safety Act of 1979 provided the Department of Transportation development and enforcement of the regulations to govern the safe transportation of pipeline natural gas and other hazardous liquids, such as gasoline, fuel oil, and others. The hearing addresses the operation of the current program and suggested improvements in the pipeline regulatory and inspection system. Testimony was heard from pipeline companies, gas utilities, the Department of Transportation, a public utility commissioner, and the National Transportation Safety Board.
