The Australian government is starting a pilot uranium project in Yeelirrie, where the uranium deposits are among the world's largest. The project has gone ahead quietly while attention was focused on the controversial Ranger mine in the Northern Territory. A development program began evolving when the orebody was discovered in 1972, with full production scheduled for the mid-1980s. Located in a remote arid section of Western Australia, the mine will operate on open-cut methods. The ore will be processed on site and sold overseas. Mining and production methods are described.
