Australia steps up uranium mining plans

Encouraged by the go-ahead for uranium to be mined on Aboriginal tribal land at the Ranger site in Australia's Northern Territory, explorers are continuing to search for more of the ore. Australia has approximately 18% of the world's known reserves, and it is estimated that about 5000 tons a year will come onto the market in the early 1980s. The Ranger agreement, the first of its kind to put the Aboriginal people in partnership with the Commonwealth, will allow Australia to expand its natural resource projects and solve a long-term balance-of-payments problem.
