Detection of hydroxylated nitro aromatic and hydroxylated nitro polycyclic aromatic compounds in an ambient air-particulate extract using bioassay-directed fractionation

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5165531
This report identifies hydroxylated nitro-polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-NO{sub 2}PAHs) in an ambient air-particulate extract by electron impact (EI) and negative chemical ionization (NCI) high-resolution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HRGC/MS) analyses. Bioassay-directed fractionation through three sequential separations led to detection of these OH-NO{sub 2}-PAHs in a highly mutagenic and substantially simplified subfraction of the extract. The compound class identification was based on comparison of both EI and NCI mass spectra of reference OH-NO{sub 2}-pyrenes. The HRGC/MC retention values for seven OH-NO{sub 2}-fluoranthene isomer. Quantification of this compound class by NCI HRGC/MC with on-column injection is demonstrated with sensitivity to 0.5 ng/micro L.
