Planning new strategies

During the past year, the independent energy industry has truly become a global business. Project development activity continues around the world as developers explore new markets. Executives in the power generation industry are focusing on new strategies for doing business in an increasingly competitive market. In the past several years, that market has expanded to cover the globe. Independent power generators are moving into markets where the need for local partners, government cooperation and new regulatory structures are inevitable and somewhat unfamiliar. As they do, they are learning the intricacies of doing business in new ways that a few years ago they may have only imagined. And they are finding challenges. The power generation industry is in the beginning stages of fundamental change. Industry players expect to see a restructuring in the next decade which has been compared to what the telephone and natural gas industries experienced in recent years. Economic growth is one of the most significant contributing factors to this change. During 1993, total, global financial activity exceeded $11 billion and an estimated 6,830 MW were expected to be brought on-line. At the same time, the amount of capacity estimated to be under development around the world rose to more than 300,000 MW.
