Independent energy established itself as a truly global industry in 1993. While activity slowed in Europe and the United States, new power initiatives moved forward at a record pace in Asia and Latin America. This year saw a continuation of 1992's leveling off of activity in the independent power industry. While the backlog of projects near completion continued to decline, the industry made significant strides in establishing its global potential. Total financial activity for the year exceeded $11 billion and an estimated 6,255 MW were expected to be brought on-line. At the same time, the amount of capacity estimated to be under development around the world rose to more than 300,000 MW. In the United States, federal regulatory changes and the states' interpretation of how to implement them dominated the year. Development of rules surrounding the National Energy Act of 1992 took most of the year, and changes in regulation of the natural gas industry went into effect. 2 tabs.
