The evolving role of power marketers in the restructured electricity market

Power Marketers are a new and growing phenomenon in the US electric power sector. Their growth in the past several years has been exponential, and they are expected to become prominent players in the future. Power marketers currently play a significant role in the wholesale electricity market by offering a variety of risk management and other sought-after value-added services. They also offer a significant role in providing liquidity and flexibility in wholesale markets that were not previously available. They are expected to become increasingly active in the retail markets as competition spreads to this segment of the industry in the next few years. This report describes the fundamentals of the power marketing business; provides insights and useful information about the industry and its major players; and describes how power marketers add value through a variety of innovative and customized services offered. Based on the experience of deregulation in other industries, the report speculates on the new industry`s continued growth and potential future role in an increasingly competitive electricity market.
