Method to control fracture orientation in underground formation

This patent describes a method of controlling hydraulic fracture orientation in hydrocarbon bearing formations penetrated by a wellbore. It comprises determining the anticipated fracture orientation of the hydrocarbon bearing formation; perforating or notching the wellbore within the formation in a direction parallel to the anticipated fracture orientation; perforating or notching the wellbore within the formation in a direction perpendicular to the anticipated fracture orientation; first fracturing the formation in the direction parallel to the anticipated fracture orientation by injecting a fluid through the wellbore and into the formation; and while injection is proceeding in the first fracture, fracturing the formation in a direction perpendicular to the anticipated fracture orientation.
