The authors have reported that when rhesus monkeys are fed marginal Zn diets (MZ) during pregnancy and lactation, their offspring are characterized by altered immune function, growth retardation and behavioral abnormalities; however, these alterations are subtle and neither the mother nor infant develop overt signs of Zn deficiency. They have now studied the effects of feeding a Zn deficient diet (ZD) during pregnancy and lactation. Compared to control and MZ mothers, ZD mothers were characterized by low plasma Zn and developed overt signs of Zn deficiency by the end of pregnancy. At this time serum metallothionein (MT) levels were higher in ZD mothers than in C or MZ mothers. {sup 65}Zn retention from a meal was higher in ZD dams than in C dams, while mitogen response was lower; these data for MZ and D dams were similar. Plasma Zn and mitogen response were lower in ZD than in C infants, with intermediate results in the M infants. {sup 65}Zn retention from a meal was highest in the Zn and lowest in the C infants. Day 30 infant liver Zn levels were similar among the groups; however, MT levels were lower in ZD and MZ infants than in C infants and Fe levels were higher in ZD than in C and MZ infants, These results show that in contrast to the subtle effect of the MZ diet, consumption of ZD diet results in overt signs of Zn deficiency in the adult female rhesus monkey and her infant.
