The author discusses a methodology being developed for computer system architecture aiming at realtime signal processing applications with a wide spectrum of throughput requirement. Modularity at VLSI chip level is the highest priority attribute in the design process; therefore, two VLSI primitives (one for computing and the other for interconnecting) were defined as the building blocks for adjusting the amount of required hardware. The software architecture was developed completely orthogonal to the hardware system architecture to ensure independence and transportability. 6 references.
