The different types of computing architectures for parallel processing and the implications of VLSI technology for their hardware implementations are addressed. The potential and limitations of parallel processing are considered along with important design, implementation, and application issues. All the main types of architectures that have been proposed for parallel processing are presented in detail, including the corresponding interconnection networks. The hardware implementation issues for different parallel processing architectures are discussed in relation to the opportunities and constraints of VLSI technology.
