Experience with precious metal anodes in open hole deep groundbeds

To optimize the design of cathodic-protection systems for large-diameter transmission pipelines in remote desert areas, the Arabian American Oil Co., Saudi Arabia, tested the performance of six high-output precious-metal anodes. After a year's operation in open wells containing water rich in sodium, magnesium, and chloride, the platinized niobium anodes produced current densities ranging from 9.5 to 25.3 A/ft/sup 2/ at 28-124 A and 22-50 V. The preliminary results suggest that platinum-niobium anodes will be more economical in high-put, deep groundbeds than the graphite or silicon iron anodes formerly used. Reduced requirements for anode size, backfill material, and support structures offset the higher cost of the precious-metal anode.
