Cathodic Engineering Equipment Co., Inc., Hattiesburg, Miss., evaluated its replaceable deep (15 ft or more) groundbed method of cathodic protection from reports available on beds installed 2 y before and from anodes that were removed, examined, photographed, and either replaced or supplemented to develop a lower current density. The method uses high-silicon cast iron, carbon, or steel anodes in compacted coke backfills. The groundbeds were examined for adequate gas permeability, satisfactory transfer of ionization to the backfill, and long-term maintenance of design resistances. Low-resistance lubricated calcined fluid petroleum coke gave the best results. This practical method facilitates the removal and replacement of deep anodes with a minimum of expense and provides the design corrosion engineer with greater leeway for the development of corrosion-mitigation systems.
