Union Oil Co. of California is moving ahead with development drilling of its Santa Clara field from Platform Gilda in 205 ft of water off the coast of Ventura, Calif. During the development drilling program, the company has solved several drilling and completion problems to improve drilling efficiencies and reduce costs. Union installed Platform Gilda, as well as Platform Gina, in 1981 (Fig. 1). Gina, set in 95 ft of water southeast of Gilda in the Hueneme field, has only 15 well slots, and Union already has completed development drilling from the platform. However, with the giant, 96-slot Gilda platform, the development drilling will take considerably longer. Union began drilling operations from Gilda in October 1981, using Pool Offshore Co.'s Rig 429. Operators continued with the one rig until March 1983 when Union's Rig 10 was moved from Gina to Gilda. Since then the two rigs have been drilling simultaneously, with Rig 10 drilling to the west and Rig 429 mainly to the east.
