Bacteriological studies were conducted on several streams affected by acid mine water and organic waste pollution. The multiple-tube fermentation technique was shown to be superior in recovery of sublethally injured coliforms from such environments when compared with the conventional one-step membrane filtration technique. Substantially enhanced recovery of injured coliforms resulted with the inclusion of an enrichment step when using the membrane filtration procedure.
