OTA (U. S. Office Of Technology Assessment) says LNG safety data inconclusive

According to a June 1978 OTA report, existing data are uncertain on the safety and behavior of LNG; several years and millions of dollars will have to be invested in the U.S. to work out problems of transporting and handling LNG; by 1985, U.S. LNG imports could amount to 5-15% of U.S. natural gas needs, compared with < 0.5% currently; and no federal siting guidelines currently exist for LNG storage and distribution facilities. A major issue is the location of storage facilities, particularly those that will receive the fuel from specially designed ships that bring the gas from producing countries such as Algeria and Indonesia. The OTA report points out that Federal regulation of LNG is fraught with jurisdictional overlaps among as many as a dozen Federal agencies; the Columbia LNG Corp. Cove Point, Md., terminal has thus far, e.g., been required to otain more than 100 permits from Federal, State, and local governments.
