Columbia LNG Corp. and Consolidated System LNG Co. have filed applications with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to import a total of 300 million cu ft/day of LNG from Iran. Columbia will import 175 and Consolidated 125 million cu ft/day. The total investment for the project, estimated by DOE to be $2 billion, would be made by the Iranian Government and by tanker-owning companies. The LNG will be shipped from Kagan, Iran, to an existing regasification plant at Cove Point, Md., which is currently receiving LNG shipments from Algeria and which has spare capacity. The proposed price for the gas would be based on a price of $1.81/million Btu in Iran plus a transportation charge of $2/million Btu. Shipments would be made under an agreement in principle involving more than 2 trillion cu ft of gas in a 20 yr project.
