Title: Phenomenological description of low-lying quadrupole excitations of spherical nuclei: effects of four-phonon anharmonicity

We have obtained analytic formulas which with sufficient accuracy solve the problem of a system of quadrupole bosons with four-quantum anharmonicity of arbitrary strength. Restrictions are found on the variations of the observed characteristics of even-even spherical nuclei due to such anharmonicity (variations of the low-lying collective levels and of the probability of quadrupole transitions between them). In spite of the explicit nonconservation of the number of boson quanta N/sub b/, the nature of the spectrum is close to that obtained in the interacting-boson model on the assumption of conservation of N/sub b/.
