New breed of combined cycle plants 4 to 11 Mw's
Solar Turbines International demonstrated its new combined cycle system. It has designed two combined cycles built around the proprietary steam generator module design and uses production solar gas turbine equipment and vendor-supplied steam turbines. The 5400-hp Centaur System is a single once-through steam generator operating off 3950-hp Centaur gas turbine exhaust heat, coupled with nominal 1500-hp steam turbine. The system tested at 6390 Btu per hp-h heat rate or 40% efficiency on natural gas fuel. The 15,000-hp Mars System combines two steam generator modules in parallel working off a 10,900-hp Mars gas turbine and coupled with a 3750-hp steam turbine for nominal 14,650-hp ISO output and 5792 Btu per hp-h gas fuel heat rate. Solar combined Mars or Centaur gas turbines with its own once-through boiler module design for gas pumping or power generation with thermal efficiencies up over 45%. (MCW)
