The effect of the divertor configuration on the radiative energy loss and the overall energy balance in the plasma has been studied in the T-12 tokamak. The spatial distribution of the emission intensity has been found with a multichannel system of pyroelectric detectors and by a new calculation method for a plasma column of elliptical cross section. The formation of the divertor configuration changed the distribution of the emission intensity and reduced the total radiated power. The radiative energy loss is determined primarily by iron; the average iron density over the cross section was n/sub Fe/approx.1 x 10/sup 11/ cm/sup -3/. The effective charge Z/sub eff/ was determined by light impurities (O,C). The divertor layer shields the plasma from the impurity influx coming from the chamber wall.
