Title: Measurements of cross section and asymmetry for [ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]][r arrow][ital b[bar b]] and heavy quark fragmentation at KEK TRISTAN

Journal Article · · Physical Review, D (Particles Fields); (United States)

Using 773 muons found in hadronic events from 142 pb[sup [minus]1] of data at a c.m. energy of 57.8 GeV, we extract the cross section and forward-backward charge asymmetry for the [ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]][r arrow][ital b[bar b]] process, and the heavy quark fragmentation function parameters for the Peterson model. For the analysis of the [ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]][r arrow][ital b[bar b]] process, we use a method in which the behavior of the [ital c] quark and lighter quarks is assumed, with only that the [ital b] quark left indeterminate. The cross section and asymmetry for [ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]][r arrow][ital b[bar b]] are found to be [ital R][sub [ital b]]=0.57[plus minus]0.06(stat)[plus minus]0.08(syst) and [ital A][sub [ital b]]=[minus]0.59[plus minus]0.09[plus minus]0.09, respectively. They are consistent with the standard model predictions. For the study of the fragmentation function we use the variable [l angle][ital x][sub [ital E]][r angle], the fraction of the beam energy carried by the heavy hadrons. We obtain [l angle][ital x][sub [ital E]][r angle][sub [ital c]]= 0.56[sub [minus]0.05[minus]0.03][sup +0.04+0.03] and [l angle][ital x][sub [ital E]][r angle][sub [ital b]]= 0.65[sub [minus]0.04[minus]0.06][sup +0.06+0.05], respectively. These are in good agreement with previously measured values.
