Precision measurement of the total cross section and charge asymmetry at TOPAZ for [ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]][r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]] and [ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]][r arrow][tau][sup +][tau][sup [minus]]

The process [ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]][r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]] and e[sup +]e[sup [minus]][r arrow][tau][sup +][tau][sup [minus]] have been studied in the energy range [radical][ital s]=52[minus]61.4 GeV, using the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. From an integrated luminosity of [ital L]=74.0 pb-1, lowest-order cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries are measured to be: [l angle][sigma][sub [mu][mu]][r angle]=25.4[plus minus]0.9[plus minus]1.2[ital pb], [l angle][ital A][sub [mu][mu]][r angle]=[minus]32.2[plus minus]3.1[plus minus]1.1%, [l angle][sigma][sub [tau][tau]][r angle]=27.1[plus minus]1.1[plus minus]1.2[ital pb], [l angle][ital A][sub [tau][tau]][r angle]=[minus]33.9[plus minus]4.9[plus minus]1.0%, at an average energy of [l angle][radical][ital s][r angle]=57.87 GeV. From the measured asymmetry we derived axial vector couplings of [ital a][sub [ital e]a[mu]]=0.96[plus minus]0.09[plus minus]0.01, and [ital a][sub [ital e]a[tau]]=1.01[plus minus]0.14[plus minus]0.01.
